Protein Piña Colada

Protein Pina Colada

Spring is here, which means delicious tropical frozen drinks are certainly apropos.  I love the ocean, and wish that Atlanta was proximal to a large body of water.  I figure if I am not at the beach, I can bring the beach to me.  So this past Friday, I mixed up a little concoction of my design to do just that.

When I thought about what ingredients I wanted to work with I had to take into account what this smoothie needed to deliver nutritionally.  I had just finished an extremely physically taxing CrossFit workout, so getting protein and healthy carbohydrates into my system was a necessity for recovery and muscle growth.  What I came up with was completely inspired.  What better tropical drink to create the illusion of beach living than a pina colada?  Once I threw on a little reggae music, I was instantly transported to the Caribbean.

So without further ado, as one of my fitness inspirations, Mankofit, always says, “Here’s what your sexy self will need”!

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup Diced Pineapples
  • 1 cup Coconut Milk
  • 1/2 cup Egg Whites (Muscle Egg my preferred choice, just make sure they are safe to eat raw)
  • 1 tbsp Almond Butter
  • 1 cup Ice

Directions:

  • Place ice, diced pineapples, and coconut milk in the blender and crush the ice
  • Add the almond butter next
  • Finish by pouring the egg whites in last while blending (helps thicken the smoothie)
  • Serve in a large glass, and enjoy

*If you are vegan, you can replace the egg whites with hemp protein, but the consistency will change.  Play with the proportions to achieve the desired texture and protein content.

**I find this to be more than sweet enough, but if you desire a more sweet flavor profile you can add a natural sweetener like raw honey or raw agave.  (If weight loss is your goal, I would omit the extra sugar)

Bon Appétit!  ~A.J.~
